Lake Sainoko

西ノ湖

Lake Sainoko is a hidden gem in Okunikko. The small lake, with a circumference of 1.5 kilometers, was once connected to nearby Lake Chuzenji, but over thousands of years, soil and sand naturally dammed and separated it. There are no paved roads leading to the lake, making the area a sanctuary for local wildlife and plants, including yachidamo, a variety of Japanese ash. Due to fluctuations in water levels, the ash forest surrounding the lake is occasionally partially submerged. Experience the tranquil ambiance by the lake, listening to the gentle sounds of the wind, birds chirping, and the occasional calls of deer.

How to get there:
About 20 minutes by low-emission bus from Akanuma Nature Information Center, then about 25 minutes on foot from the Sainoko Iriguchi bus stop. Or 40 minutes on foot from Senjugahama.
