Skiing and snowboarding

The area's convenient ski slopes are a thrilling addition to any winter Nikko trip, or an easy ski retreat all on their own.

Edelweiss Ski Resort is located to the north and caters to skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Ski and snowboard lessons and rental gear are available, so first-timers can easily enjoy a day on the hill.

The Nikko Yumoto Onsen ski hill is on the eastern slopes of Mt. Shirane. This small, manageable hill is a good choice for beginners or those looking for a more relaxing ride. Lessons and equipment rental are available.

Try more exploratory winter activities to best explore Nikko's natural surroundings. Head to Kotoku Onsen in Okunikko for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing through Nikko’s serene snow country. In nearby Unryu Valley, snow trekking tours allow travelers to experience crystal clouds and hanging icicles lining the crevasses.

For ice skating, head to Kirifuri Skate Arena in central Nikko. The rink is also home to the Nikko Icebucks, a professional ice hockey team.
