What to do

Sightseeing taxi options vary by course and time. There are many packages to choose from based on sights and length.

A basic three-hour course from Tobu-Nikko Station covers the highlights of Akechidaira Ropeway and Nikko Toshogu Shrine, while other course options extend up to five hours and include more far-flung destinations such as Kanmangafuchi Abyss and Kegon Falls.

There are even seasonal package offerings, such as the autumn foliage tour that gives passengers a special view of the changing leaves around Kinugawa Onsen every October and November.

How to book

Nikko Kotsu is the most common taxi company in Nikko. Their deluxe taxis can accommodate up to five passengers, while their maxi-taxis accommodate up to nine for a slightly higher fee. Pricing is course-specific, but ranges from around 12,000 yen for a two-hour tour to 30,000 yen for a five-hour tour. Some companies offer daytrip sightseeing taxis from Tokyo for a luxurious, relaxing journey to and around Nikko, before returning to Tokyo at night.

Central Nikko

Ashio is most famous for its copper mine, which flourished for over 400 years. Visitors can ride trolleys down the 700-meter long mining tunnel and get a feel for the mine as it once existed.
