Urushi Museum

小西美術工藝社附属 うるし博物館

Japanese lacquerware — urushi in Japanese — is an ancient artform from as early as around B.C. 5,500. The Urushi Museum in Nikko displays a varied collection of historical lacquerware and even offers a visitors a chance to paint their own lacquerware products (1,700 yen and up).

Admission to the museum is free.

How to get there:
7 minutes from Nikko Station or Tobu-Nikko Station by buses bound for Kirifuri Kogen to Marumi bus stop, then a 10-minute walk.
