The Jizo at the Junction (Oiwake Jizoson)
追分地蔵尊
This statue is enshrined at the intersection of the historic Nikko and Reiheishi roads, but it was not originally placed there. According to legend, it originally was one of the Jizo statues that line the path along the Daiya River (about 10 kilometers to the northwest). The legend says that it was discovered by a local stonemason after a large flood. While quarrying rock, he struck a boulder and was astonished to see blood leaking from the chisel mark. When the boulder was unearthed, it was revealed to be a statue of the bodhisattva Jizo, protector of children and travelers. With help from the entire village, the 2.9-meter-tall, 8-metric-ton statue was carried here—or so the story goes.
