Nikko Toshogu Shrine Annual Grand Spring Festival
日光東照宮春季例大祭
Nikko Toshogu’s foremost event, the Reitaisei (Grand Festival) is held every year. On May 17, you can see the ancient art of yabusame (horseback archery), followed on the next day by a grand procession. A mikoshi (portable shrine) is carried through town, accompanied by 1,000 people dressed as samurai. This display reproduces Tokugawa Ieyasu’s funeral procession, in which his grave was transferred from Mt. Kunousan in Shizuoka Prefecture to Nikko.
