Lake Chuzenji Hiking
中禅寺湖ハイキング
One of Japan’s highest natural lakes, Lake Chuzenji is located 1,269 meters above sea level at the foot of Mt. Nantai. The lake was formed by an eruption of Mt. Nantai about 20,000 years ago. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a popular summer resort with villas owned by foreigners and embassies. A 25-kilometer hiking course runs along the perimeter, and visitors can view blooming azaleas in early summer and bright foliage in autumn.
