Akanuma
赤沼
At the entrance to the Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail, Akanuma, which means "red marsh," is named after an ancient legend depicting a fierce battle between the deities of Mt. Nantai and Mt. Akagi, which left the area stained with blood. Akanuma Nature Information Center is the ideal place to begin exploring the area. Learn about local flora and fauna and check hiking routes and trail conditions before hiking to Senjogahara and Lake Sainoko. The information center has toilets and a waiting area for bus services. A low-emission bus service operates between Akanuma and Senjugahama at Lake Chuzenji via Lake Sainoko, providing convenient access to the Okunikko forests and hiking trails. The information center and some hiking trails are closed during the winter.
